Setting up for success -- Starting the Year Strong in Early Childhood Education

Jo Maloney

The beginning of the year is a fresh canvas—a chance to set the tone, align your intentions, and create an incredible foundation for delivering high-quality care and education. What a privilege we have to positively impact the lives of children and families! Let's look at a few key ideas to help you and your team start the year in a consciously positive way.

Team Support: Together, We Thrive

Strong teams create strong outcomes! Kick off the year by having an open discussion with your colleagues about how to signal when you need support or need to step away during challenging moments. Maybe it's a specific word, a hand gesture, or a discreet visual cue.

While phrases like “I’m going to the bathroom” are often used as an exit strategy, they can leave your team unaware of the true context, resulting in you being pulled right back into the challenge upon return. Take the time to set clear expectations and brainstorm supportive strategies so everyone is on the same page.

These conversations can also pave the way for bigger discussions on how you’ll back each other up throughout the year. When your team feels supported, everyone wins—especially the children.

Welcoming Morning Routines: Start the Day Right

Mornings set the stage for the day ahead, so let’s make them calm and predictable for everyone—children, families, and educators alike.

Create an intentional “welcome space” in your room—perhaps with basic construction items, a playdough table, or an area with simple toys that encourage independent engagement. This designated spot anchors children as they arrive and allows you to focus on welcoming them warmly while supporting their transition.

Staying in one place rather than moving between families at the door ensures you're available to all the children settling in, fostering their sense of safety and security. Share this morning routine and its purpose with your team and families. When everyone knows what to expect, it creates predictability, trust, and a smoother start to each day.

Reflect on Your “Why”: Stay Grounded in Purpose

Why did you choose to work in early childhood education? Research shows that when educators connect with their sense of purpose, it can be a powerful buffer against stress and burnout.

Take a moment to write down your personal “why.” Then, share it with your team and consider crafting a collective “why” statement for your room or section. This shared mission can serve as a touchstone during challenging moments and deepen your connection with one another.

A Fresh Year, a Bright Beginning

As you step into this new year, remember the power you have to shape your environment, strengthen your team, and create meaningful experiences for the children and families you serve. Let’s make this year one of collaboration, intention, and purpose!

What are your strategies for starting the year strong? Share your ideas—I’d love to hear from you!
